The Sound and Music of The Color Purple
14-12-2023
The Sound and Music of The Color Purple
In this exclusive SoundWorks Collection video we explore the seamless integration of the blues, gospel, and spirituals of Director Blitz Bazawule's THE COLOR PURPLE. We delve into how the music becomes a character in itself, amplifying the triumphs and tribulations of Celie and the ensemble cast. From the hauntingly beautiful to the joyously uplifting, THE COLOR PURPLE weaves a sonic tapestry that mirrors the emotional richness of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. ABOUT THE COLOR PURPLE Torn apart from her sister Nettie (Halle Bailey) and her children, Celie (Fantasia Barrino in her major motion picture debut, reprising her 2005 role from Broadway) faces many hardships in her life, including an abusive husband simply called Mister (Colman Domingo). With the support of sultry singer Shug Avery (Taraji P. Henson) and stand-her-ground stepdaughter Sofia (Danielle Brooks, Tony-nominated for the role on Broadway), Celie ultimately finds extraordinary strength in the unbreakable bonds of a new kind of sisterhood. “The Color Purple” is directed by Blitz Bazawule from a screenplay by acclaimed playwright and WGA Award winner Marcus Gardley (“The Maid”). Bazawule is a Ghanaian multimedia artist who was a co-director on Beyonce’s Black is King and made his feature debut with the critically acclaimed Afrofuturistic “The Burial of Kojo.” SUBSCRIBE ON YOUTUBE: http://bit.ly/SubscribeSoundWorksCollection AUDIO PODCAST SUBSCRIBE: https://linktr.ee/soundworkscollection MORE VIDEOS AND NEWS: https://www.SoundWorksCollection.com
The Sound of NOPE with Jordan Peele & Johnnie Burn

The Sound of NOPE with Jordan Peele & Johnnie Burn
In this exclusive SoundWorks Collection video, Director Jordan Peele and Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Designer and Re-recording Mixer Johnnie Burn discuss the creative process for crafting the sonic world of NOPE. They explore the use of silence, haunting winds, slowed down peacock vocals and startling chimpanzee foley. A man and his sister discover something sinister in the skies above their California horse ranch, while the owner of a nearby theme park tries to profit from the mysterious, otherworldly phenomenon. "What they've orchestrated as the soundscape of this film is otherworldly in a way so haunting that I literally had nightmares just about these sounds. Some of them come from terrestrial terrors, allowing Peele to suggest scenes of grisly violence without making a gruesome visual spectacle. Instead, off-camera attacks are seen in shrewd glimpses, but the violence hits hard because of the wet, pulpy thuds of the blows coming down. You don't need to see the blood when you can hear it." MASHABLE.COM "NOPE has been hand-tooled for the kind of presentation you can only get in a real theater — preferably Imax, to take full advantage of the film’s striking production design and eerie sound mix, which ranges from a thunderous, cinderblock-shaking roar to the kind of hush that isn’t so much a stillness as a sonic vacuum: the kind of silence in which you hear nothing but your own heartbeat. Kudos to sound designer Johnnie Burn" THE WASHINGTON POST JOHNNIE BURN: Johnnie Burn is a British Film Sound Designer, Supervisor and Re-Recording Mixer working on films that use sound well, in London, New York & LA. Recent work is the immersive soundscape and sound design of Jordan Peele’s NOPE. His first film outing was Jonathan Glazers' extraordinary UNDER THE SKIN, which led him to meet director Yorgos Lanthimos in 2015 to work on THE LOBSTER, THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER in 2017 and The Academy Award winning THE FAVOURITE in 2019. Johnnie had great success with Trey Edward Shults’ WAVES (2019), and more recently the incredible Francis Lee's AMMONITE. MORE INFORMATION: www.the-alan-parsons-project.com ABOUT THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT: The Alan Parsons Project was a progressive rock music entity comprised of engineer/ producer Alan Parsons and songwriter, musician and manager Eric Woolfson. They released 10 concept albums between 1976 – 1987 and have sold over 55 million albums world-wide.  Their focus was on very high quality studio sound production and they recorded most of their work at Abbey Road Studios in London. They used a variety of different lead vocalists and musicians on every album – choosing who they felt was the best for each song rather than being constrained to moulding the material for one specific artist.  They have been name-checked in The Simpsons and Austin Powers film and their music is used regularly in adverts, films, sporting events and is often sampled by US rap artists.
