Behind The Record: "Turbulence" (2007)

Before I met either one of the guys who later became ¡MAYDAY!, I was a fan. I followed both groups they were in prior to linking up. Bernz was a member of a group called Evolver and I had every vinyl they dropped. Plex was the elusive producer of Algorithm who I was also a big fan of. As far as I was concerned Plex was one of the best producers i'd ever heard out of miami. The way he chopped samples was on level with an RJD2 or Dj Shadow. Plus his drums always BANGED! The first time I met Plex was at an Evolver show at Slak Lounge in Miami. During the set while Bern was on stage rocking, I noticed I was standing right next to Plex. I was waiting for my chance to break the ice and say what up to him. Finally Evolver started to play their lead single at the time "Proper Word". Since i had the vinyl of that single, I knew that Plex did the remix of Proper Word. So i leaned over and said "yo man, you killed the remix of this." He thanked me and I introduced myself and that would be the beginning of a long friendship.

Fast forward to a couple of years before I officially joined Mayday and Plex and I were working on a bunch of demos together. A couple of them would go on to become a part of A Soiree For Skeptics like Imposter & Let Go. One of them would become Lock Load Boom from the Elevator Music mixtape. A few of them still sit in the vault today. But I always wondered about one specific demo that I never managed to attach to any project.

Turbulence.

Recorded in February of 2007, Turbulence was made in the early era of Plex leaving sampling and beginning to use his own keyboard and guitar riffs in his music. I actually think this one was before he picked up the guitar fully. I loved the vibe of the beat and I must have taken a flight sometime close to the moment he kicked me the beat because the concept of a rough turbulent flight was vivid in my mind.

For some reason or another it never made it to an official project but i've always loved the vibe of it. It also reminds me of the era when I first started working with Plex which is a time i treasure very much and often refer to as "my college years".

Here's to hoping Plex jumps back on the grid one day for an alumni reunion lol.

Turbulence is available in the Wrekonize Crate filled with audio gems and miscellaneous goodies and is available to all tiers of The Wreking Crew. If you haven't downloaded it yet visit > http://bit.ly/WrekonizeCrate and enter the password nocnog
